Tammy Lynne Penn is a highly respected museum artist whose breathtaking sculptures have captured the spirit, strength, and beauty of animals for more than thirty years. Born and raised in Colorado on a farm first homesteaded by her family in 1872, Tammy grew up surrounded by animals—horses, cattle, dogs, cats, birds, and more. This deep connection to the natural world shaped her from the very beginning. By age four she was sketching horses, and soon after, her drawings gave way to sculpting with kiln-fired clay. As her skills developed, Tammy became known as a Western Raku artist, adapting a centuries-old Japanese ceramic tradition first used by Zen Buddhist masters in the 1500s. She transformed it into a uniquely Western art form, creating remarkable mixed-media animal sculptures that blended raku-fired ceramics with silver, stone, and other natural elements. In 1988, Tammy created her first bronze sculpture and discovered her true artistic home. Since then, bronze has become her primary medium, allowing her to express the full depth of her vision. Her inspiration still comes daily from life with her animals. Today, Tammy and her husband, Hunter, share their Texas ranch—“a little slice of heaven”—with six horses, two dogs, two cats, an owl, a hawk, a falcon, and a longhorn steer named Gus, after her great-grandfather Gustav. Tammy explains, “The connection of all my animals to my artwork is that I am constantly observing their actions, their personalities, and their anatomy. This allows me to capture their beauty and spirit when sculpting.” Tammy’s body of work ranges from delicate miniatures to monumental public pieces. Her bronzes invite an emotional journey—tenderness in a newborn colt, the mischievous joy of a young goat, or the raw strength of a powerful stallion. Some sculptures bring laughter, others inspire awe, and many evoke a heartfelt “awww.” Above all, Tammy Lynne Penn’s art moves people—by revealing the love, beauty, and spirit she sees in the animals that have always been at the heart of her life.
