Judy Horowitz’s wears her fascination on her sleeve, and applies it to her canvases too - it’s people. Horowitz’s people, who appear both whimsical and heartfelt, are realized in broad, reductive, painterly strokes. They have been a consistent theme in her artwork throughout the years, and her affection for them is evident. Portraits they are not - her people instead represent broader aspects of humanity and of the human experience. They are a moment in time, an age, an emotion, a purpose, an interaction, perhaps a relationship, all wrapped up in a story. There is always a story, she says. “You just have to ask.” Oil paint is Judy’s medium of choice, as she finds its limitless versatility to be unbeatable for conveying the mood and emotion at the heart of her works. Judy earned her BFA from Ohio State University, and her MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts.
