Kim Anno's new body of paintings entitled Grand Tour, are spectacular images of iconic cities and landscapes that we cherish, and damage, by "loving them too much". Grand Tour is a uniquely new approach to painting and the work was recently debuted at the Miami art fairs by Marcia Wood Gallery to wide acclaim. Photographic images are inkjet printed directly onto either aluminum or canvas and then oil paint is applied in a variety of methods. The resulting work is beautiful, sensual, haunting and provocative. The exhibition in Atlanta will be only the second viewing of this series and will include Paris, Venice, Florence, Yosemite, Miami, San Francisco and London, among others. All of Anno’s imagery – cinematic, photographic, paintings – are painterly, with a sense of irony, beauty, and loss. The imagery throughout the various mediums speaks to a disruption with the environment, of iconic places, cities, landscapes, nature, that we all hold dear and ache to see marred, spoiled and endangered. The work is ambiguous with it’s tension between lyrical fluid painterly beauty and subtle implications of destruction. Kim Anno was born in Los Angeles, California and lives currently in Berkeley, CA, where she is currently a professor of painting at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco. She is a painter, photographer and video artist. Her work is marked by a sense of visceral and sensual color and fluidity, in figurative and abstract paintings, photography and video. Anno is also passionately devoted to expanding the function of art in society. In July 2012 she had a solo exhibition at the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg. Also in July 2012, her video work was screened at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, as well as in Cape Town, SA in “Letters from the Sky”. In Fall 2011, she screened her video “Men and Women in Water Cities, Chapter 1” on a monumental scale - 67’x15’, in Flux Projects, Atlanta, as well as showed her photography in “Don’t Panic” Bartel Trust Centre Gallery in Durban, South Africa. In 2012 she was awarded an Open Circle Foundation Fellowship supporting “Men and Women in Water Cities, Chapter 3”. In 2010 her video was presented at the 2010 Site Santa Fe Biennale’s “One Night Stand Video screening”, The Berkeley Art Center, the Bedford Gallery, and Launch pad Brooklyn in New York. I In 2012 Anno's new “Grand Tour” paintings were introduced at Art Miami/ CONTEXT Art Fair, Miami, with Marcia Wood Gallery. In 2010, her etching was included in the print portfolio “Pull”, by the Marcia Wood Gallery, followed by a solo exhibition of paintings at Marcia Wood Gallery. In 2009 she had two solo exhibitions, one a retrospective at King’s Art Center in Hanford, California, and the other at Patricia Sweetow gallery in San Francisco. In 2003 Anno published The Mirror of Simple Souls, an artists' book in collaboration with Anne Carson at One Crow Press at St. Benedict’s/St. John’s University in Minnesota. In 2006, the Getty Research Institute acquired the book as did Columbia University. In 2013, she will publish, Albertine’s Work Out with Carson. She has exhibited her work at the Berkeley Art Museum and the Varnosi Museum in Hungary, Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts, New York, the Zaloren Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City, Museum of Modern Art in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, Peter Miller Gallery in Chicago, Sue Scott Gallery, NY, Patricia Correia Gallery in Los Angeles, Gallery 128 New York, NY, The Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, Calif., The Hyde Collection, N.Y., Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, and Obudai Galeria, Budapest, Hungary as well as the Embassador's Estate in KualaLampur, and Qatar (Artists in Embassies Program), the Mead Museum, and the Bennington Museum among others. Anno’s work is included in museum collections nationally and internationally, such as SFMOMA, the Honolulu Academy of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, the Oakland Museum, and the Herzog-Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunshweig, Germany, among others. In 2012 Anno received a commission from the Goethe Institute, as well as a St. John’s Literary Press commission for a photogravure print. In 2012-2010 she was awarded a fellowship from the Zellerbach Foundation, in 2002 a Fleischhaker Award from the Eureka Foundation, in 2001 a Gerbode Foundation Purchase Award for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Honolulu Academy of Art Museum. Anno has also received the Western States Regional/National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, Creative Work Fund grant of the Walter and Elise Haas Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Fellowship at Yaddo for her collaboration with Anne Carson, the Flintridge Foundation Fellowship at Djerassi Foundation, several California Arts Council Grants, a San Francisco Arts Commission Fellowship, and a City of Oakland public art commission.
