After graduating from Central Saint Martins in London, Johan Andersson quickly emerged as a significant voice in contemporary figurative painting. He became the youngest artist ever shortlisted for the BP Portrait Award and was named one of The Independent’s Top 20 Artists. His work has been exhibited at leading institutions including the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Saatchi Gallery, and he has shown alongside artists such as Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, Francis Bacon, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Sir Peter Blake, and Howard Hodgkin. Andersson’s paintings have appeared on the international art market through major fairs and exhibitions in Basel, Miami, Paris, New York, and London. In 2010, he was selected by Sky Arts as the “one to watch” among young British contemporary artists for the six-week documentary Art of Survival, which aired in 2011. His collectors include notable figures such as George Lucas; Stewart Butterfield, founder of Flickr and Slack; tech pioneer Casey Cowell; Academy Award–winner Per Hallberg; and Eugene Tenenbaum, director of Chelsea FC. Andersson was recently named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Creatives by TimeOut and was highlighted in The Guardian’s “Art Imitating Life: How This Year’s Armory Show Got Political” as an artist to watch. A committed advocate for social causes, Andersson has donated works to support organizations addressing torture survival, facial disfigurement (Changing Faces), breast cancer research, and youth empowerment through Hope Heals. In 2019–20, he contributed works to Safe Place for Youth, Venice Family Clinic, and Google’s community programs. He also donated pieces to benefit The View magazine—run by female inmates—to assist women being released from prison during the COVID-19 crisis. During the pandemic, he used his art to help raise funds for Montefiore Hospital in New York. Critics often characterize Andersson as a "voice for the voiceless." His work confronts contemporary realities with emotional depth, compassion, and psychological intensity. As Arte al Límite writes, “Andersson’s work is saturated with realities that remind us of an unreal world—provocative, bold, and rooted in a profound sense of justice.”Art critic Laurence Fuller reflects: “Portrait flashes of old master painters came flooding into my consciousness—from Rembrandt to Freud to Peter Howson. I was overcome by the humanity emanating from the canvas… more human than human.” SELECTED COLLECTIONSJason Flom (Atlantic and Virgin Records)Farhad Massoudi (Tubi TV Founder)Eugine Tenenbaum (Chelsea Football Club Director)George Lucas (Filmmaker)Casey Cowell (USA Robotics)Per Hallberg (Academy Award Winning Sound Editor)Tim Deggett (Olympic Gold Medal Gymnast) MUSEUMS AND INSTITUTIONSEnglefield House & Highclere CastleSaatchi GalleryNational Portrait GalleryVictoria and Albert MuseumRoyal West Bristol Museum
