David Shrigley is a British artist celebrated for his witty, satirical, and darkly humorous take on the absurdities of everyday life. Working across drawing, sculpture, painting, and installation, Shrigley uses simple, almost childlike imagery paired with sharp text to expose the contradictions, anxieties, and comedy of the human condition. Born in Macclesfield, England, and raised in Leicester, Shrigley studied Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art, where he developed the distinctive deadpan tone that would later make him an international icon. His works are instantly recognizable—raw, spontaneous, and charged with irony—turning the mundane into the profoundly hilarious and relatable. Shrigley has exhibited widely in museums and galleries around the world, including the Tate Britain in London, the Serpentine Gallery, the Hayward Gallery, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. In 2013, he was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize, and in 2016 his monumental sculpture Really Good—a 10-meter-high thumbs-up—was installed on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth, cementing his place in the landscape of contemporary British art. Beyond the gallery, Shrigley’s art has crossed into popular culture through collaborations with musicians, fashion designers, and public campaigns, reflecting his belief that art should be accessible, disarming, and unpretentious.Today, David Shrigley’s works can be found in major public and private collections worldwide. His unique visual language—at once funny, poignant, and unsettling—continues to challenge viewers to laugh, think, and question everything.
