1946 - Born in Troy, Alabama on November 10, 1946;Education: Troy Laboratory School, Troy Junior High, Charles Henderson High School, Troy University, and Graduated from Auburn University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Interior Design from the School of Architecture.1969 to 2021, my professional career as a commercial interior designer honed my skills for color, texture, proportion, and structure which I now use in my current work at the MHJ Studio at Serenbe. My commercial interior design work included the interior architecture, and FF&E for over 7 million square feet of space. Projects were both domestic and international. They were located in over 25 states and 2 countries. A wide range of project types included workplace environments, emergency operations centers, a variety of public spaces, hotels, restaurants, condominium buildings, cruise ships, sports facilities, retail shops, and airports. I gained recognition through multiple design awards and published work throughout my career. My creative journey began at an early age with art classes and summer art programs. At Charles Henderson High School a special class was set up for students with artistic goals. 1964 I entered my work in a competition at a CHHS Science Fair hobby division and won first place. As a commercial interior designer and before CAD, I was hand-drawing perspectives and rendering interior environments for many of my projects. In addition to my interior design work, I began the MHJ Jewelry Studio in 2011 in Washington DC. I created one-of-a-kind statement jewelry pieces utilizing alternative materials. In 2016, after my move to Serenbe, the studio name was changed to MHJ Studio at Serenbe. Currently, a wide range of media is used to create work in the studio including photography, Gell plate monoprints, collages, paintings, and botanical statements. I am constantly expanding the scale of my work and the complexity of the visual. The current pieces are very textural and atmospheric statements often incorporating other materials in the messaging.
