1982, Rotherham, UK. Lives and works in London Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Royal Academy Schools. BA Hons in Fine Art from Northumbria University, Newcastle. Expansive modular panels that act as a stage for ineffable compositions to morph along colour, form and shape, Harminder Judge‘s works vibrate with a primordial force and depth. As transportive sculptural works, his creations simultaneously reference the abstract expressionist and colourfield movements of the 20th century alongside Indian neo-tantric painting. In a bold updating of brushless painting, Harminder Judge‘s creative approach resembles an alchemical process: Pigments are layered into pools of wet plaster followed by prolonged periods of excavation that involve sanding, polishing and oiling. Of pulsating rhythm, the resulting surfaces gleam with emanations of chromatic formations that seem to rise up from the solid granite-like panels. The granular and the cosmic converge in a tangle of material realities turned image, in what plays out as mesmerising phenomena of states between stasis and flux. Perennial metamorphosis and sudden crystallisation thus perform an impossible dance as the artist pushes 'au-delà de la peinture'. Collapsing linear time, his works exist in the forever present moment. Rather than paintings, they are portals that invite contemplation while the eye wanders across and beyond the picture plane.Through the often evocative titles, Harminder Judge thereby aims to allude to a pivotal moment in his teenage years. Arriving in Amritsar, Punjab at the age of 15, he made the journey to his family‘s village in Attowal to take part in the funeral rites of his grandfather. The intimate rituals involved stages such as undressing and washing the body, preparing the cremation pyre, tending the fire during the night and collecting his grandfather‘s ashes, bone fragments and jewellery in the morning sun. The intense emotional and sensorial experiences left an indelible memory in the wake of the both physical and spiritual transformation of body turning into ash, the material dissolving into the immaterial, the physical becoming metaphysical. Processes underpinning the cycle of life which have since informed his artistic practice. Harminder Judge has had solo and group exhibitions at Sean Kelly NY (NYC), Gathering (Ibiza), Jhaveri Contemporary (Mumbai), The Sunday Painter (London), galeriepcp (Paris), Arnolfini (Bristol), Galerie Kandlhofer (Vienna), Pace Gallery (NYC), Blindspot Gallery (Hong Kong), White Cube (London), Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (Birmingham).
