1977, Toronto, Canada. Lives and works in Toronto. MFA from York University Drawing on a variety of repetitive and labour intensive processes and materials, Erin Vincent creates works that speak a visual language wholly her own. From an early age, things have always fascinated the artist for imbued with a primordial force that seemed to hail her from a place of ‘vibrant matter‘. The discarded and random - pieces of cardboard and paper, cushions of pins, strings of thread - have thus become the starting point for her creations as she de-categorises the fonts and substances of choice to remove them from established hierarchies. Of heightened tactile quality, Erin Vincent‘s sculptures possess a liveliness, calling for the beholder‘s attention since pulsating with a sense of suspenseful metamorphosis and transformation. In their intricate surface structure, they recall topographies of material becoming, always in flux, always in motion. Rather than imposing herself on the different materials chosen, she allows the work to unfold following its own rhythm, in a nod to the object-as-agent. Often consisting of several hundreds or thousands of pieces, the final creation harbours the painstakingly slow process of assembling the individual elements. By this, the works unravel as material expressions of the artist‘s practice whose intuitive grasp of matter translates into compositions of great visual allure. Erin Vincent has had solo and group exhibitions at Christie Contemporary (Toronto), Muriel Gupie (NYC) and Karen Imperial Gallery (San Francisco). Her work can be found in various private and public collections, among others, Fitzrovia properties, Claridge Foundation, Bank of Montreal, Ace Hotel and Global Affairs Canada.
