Seattle-based artist Steve Jensen has been an influential presence in the Pacific Northwest art scene for more than 30 years. His work spans monumental public installations as well as emotionally resonant paintings and sculptures rooted in personal narrative. For Jensen, the boat is a powerful symbol of passage - between places, states of being, and ultimately between life and death. His carved, calligraphic motifs reflect a lifelong connection to the water, while his use of reclaimed materials echoes the aesthetic traditions of his Norwegian heritage. Raised in a family of Norwegian fishermen and boat builders, and spending his childhood on his father’s fishing boat, Jensen brings this legacy directly into his art. His current body of work, Böts, continues his exploration of the boat as a universal and deeply human image. Jensen has exhibited at numerous venues throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond including the SAM Gallery at the Seattle Art Museum, Bellevue Arts Museum, Nordic Heritage Museum, Morris Graves Museum of Art, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, Foss Seaport Museum, Vashon Center for the Arts, and San Juan Island Museum of Art. His work was featured by Channel 9 “Art as Voyage” Steve Jensen’s Nordic Heritage and Amazon Prime, “The Story of Art in America”, episode 10, 2023. "For me the image of the boat is meant to symbolize a voyage or journey. Perhaps it is the voyage to the other side, or the journey to the unkown." - Sven (Steve) Jensen
