Our Northwest landscape and its seasons have made me who I am as a painter. Fromthe desert, to the mountains, to the sea, I observe and respond to our naturalenvironments through the paint, evoking light and atmosphere through color, gesture, and subtle texture.Summoning summer’s dramatic skies over mountain silhouettes.Celebrating the Willamette Valley’s big blooms of spring and autumn color, surroundedby the veiled peaks of the Cascades.Honoring the geology along the coastlines, totems of the Oregon and Washingtoncoasts.Searching for moody sunsets and mountain reflections, misty treetops and endlesslight-kissed waters of the Puget Sound and beyond.Though I often use collected and found imagery as resources, I don’t work directly fromphotos. I rather work more intuitively after studying an idea, creating a sketch or often acollage, considering and editing concepts and designs. Or I may dive into a blankcanvas more improvisationally, responding to recent events or travels, inviting theexperience of nature to appear in the process, guiding me and informing what imagerymay evolve next, capturing “what it feels like”.My painting techniques begin with wet, stain-like washes and gestures of fluid acrylicpaints, carving out shapes and contours on the canvas, drawing out light and shadows, suggesting silhouettes. I then build up the surface, layering luminous glazes and paintmarks, adding textures, including metallic pigments to enhance the feeling of the earthsparkling in the sun or highlight the glimmer of fleeting light on a horizon. BIO:The environments in which Jeni Lee has lived and traveled have become the foundationof who she is as a painter.
