Józef Hałas was a leading figure in Polish contemporary art whose work reimagined nature through abstraction and geometry. Born in Nowy Sącz, Poland, and educated in Wrocław under painter Eugeniusz Geppert, he later became a respected professor and influential mentor to generations of artists. Hałas’s paintings are known for their textured surfaces, restrained palettes, and dynamic interplay of structure and rhythm—evoking landscapes and natural forms without literal depiction. He explored the harmony and tension between opposites: movement and stillness, horizontal and vertical, light and shadow. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Hałas exhibited widely in Poland and abroad, with works now held in major museum and private collections. His art continues to inspire through its meditative balance between geometry, emotion, and the living essence of nature.
