Born in Denver, Colorado in 1994, Sawyer E. Tautz is an emerging American artist based in Los Angeles, California. He earned his B.A. in Fine Art from Westmont College in Santa Barbara in 2017, where he developed the foundation for his sculptural, painterly, and installation-based practice. Over the past decade, Tautz has cultivated a distinctive artistic voice shaped by his parallel career in luxury design and metal fabrication. Working with Neal Feay Studio in Goleta, California, he has served as Color Engineer and Lead Fabricator for some of today’s most visionary creative minds—including renowned artists, architects, and international fashion houses. In these roles, Tautz refined his mastery of material precision, refined surfaces, and spatial composition, achieving a rare level of artisan execution that now defines his personal work. Tautz’s independent practice explores the power of line, shape, and color, engaging with the sensory languages of reflection, spatial rhythm, and nuanced color relationships. Each work unfolds as a process-driven meditation—an act of iterating and shaping energy into harmony and light. His exhibitions include Tiny Little Embers (NoHo Gallery, Los Angeles, 2024), Deheems in Tune (Old Town Gallery, Goleta, 2021) Vices and Virtues (x.Our Gallery, Santa Barbara, 2019), and If Not, When (Ridley-Tree Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, 2017). Beyond his studio practice, Tautz’s fabrication and installation work has been featured in major cultural events and institutions, including New York Design Week (2024), where he was invited as a keynote speaker on bespoke craftsmanship; Design Miami Los Angeles (2023); Christie’s Beverly Hills (2023) with Artist Sami Hayek; and Design Miami VIP Booth with Bethan Laura Wood (2018). Emerging from the intersection of contemporary art and luxury fabrication, Tautz’s work bridges disciplines—translating the language of precision and material mastery into meditative forms that explore light, space, and the quiet balance of order and emotion.
