Michael Schwartz discovered pottery after a successful career in an entirely different field. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he spent his early years in New York City, eventually earning his medical degree and practicing psychiatry in Denver, Colorado for twenty-seven years. After retiring to Florence, Oregon in 1995, he took his first pottery lesson — an experience that would unexpectedly become a lifelong passion. Working primarily in pit-fired ceramics, Schwartz embraces one of the oldest known methods of firing clay, a process that predates the invention of the kiln. His vessels are carefully thrown on the potter's wheel, burnished by hand to a soft sheen, and then transformed through the unpredictable interaction of fire, smoke, salts, and metals. Rather than relying on glazes, the distinctive colors and patterns found in his work emerge naturally during the firing process, making each piece entirely unique. Schwartz's ceramics reflect both craftsmanship and an appreciation for chance. Copper carbonate, salts, metal mesh, and carefully controlled firing conditions create surfaces rich with subtle blacks, grays, reds, greens, and smoky variations. No two pieces are ever alike. The final unveiling after firing has become one of his favorite moments in the process — a blend of discovery, surprise, and artistic collaboration with the elements themselves. Deeply influenced by ancient ceramic traditions, particularly those of Indigenous cultures of the American Southwest, Schwartz views his work as both contemporary art and a continuation of a timeless practice. His vessels are created not as functional wares, but as objects intended to engage the eye and nourish the spirit. Known for his warmth and humor, Schwartz often sums up his journey from psychiatrist to potter with the phrase, "May all your crackpots be made of clay only." His work continues to be collected and appreciated for its rich surfaces, organic beauty, and celebration of the transformative power of fire.
