Harley Talkington is a pastel artist whose work celebrates the beauty of the natural world and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed. A lifelong creative spirit, he has explored artistic expression in many forms, from writing and poetry to sculpture, design, and visual art. Throughout his career as an educator, he shared that passion with generations of students, weaving art into lessons on history, science, literature, mathematics, and culture. After more than forty years of teaching, Talkington retired from the classroom and turned his attention fully to his own artistic practice. Following a visit to Washington County Open Studios in 2015, he discovered pastel painting and was immediately captivated by the medium's immediacy, vibrancy, and expressive possibilities. That fascination continues to inspire his work today. Light is at the heart of Talkington's paintings. Whether working en plein air or from sketches and photographs gathered during his travels, he is drawn to the interplay of sunlight and shadow and the emotional connection a landscape can evoke. Each painting begins as an act of observation — a way of honoring a place that moved him and preserving a fleeting moment in time. His process balances structure and spontaneity. Layered color washes, textured surfaces, and expressive pastel applications allow him to capture both the atmosphere and energy of a scene. Open to discovery throughout the creative process, he embraces unexpected color relationships and happy surprises that emerge along the way. For Talkington, painting is a way of paying attention. Each work serves as a tribute to a special place and a moment of connection with the landscape. Through his paintings, he invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and share in the wonder and beauty that inspired them.
