Brock DeBoer’s artistic process as a ceramic sculptor incorporates porcelain, historical motifs, and refined surface treatments to re-contextualize everyday objects, items from his past, and elements of popular culture. Many of these objects carry deep nostalgia for his generation and beyond, touching on familiar facets of daily life. DeBoer’s meticulously crafted porcelain casts become archival in nature, altering their permanence while questioning the cultural and emotional value placed on ordinary items. Drawing influence from his Midwestern upbringing, the ever-changing and diverse landscape of Los Angeles, and the quiet rural expanse of Joshua Tree, DeBoer creates work that bridges personal history and contemporary culture. With extensive knowledge of ceramic materials and processes, DeBoer gives his sculptures new life as heirlooms of the 21st century. Through the use of classical cobalt motifs and true-to-life finishes, his casts become suspended somewhere between the past and the present—at once familiar and reimagined.Brock DeBoer, born in South Dakota in 1985, currently lives and works in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, California.
