Maria de Los Angeles Pena (b.1964, El Salvador) is a Maltese illustrator, storyboard artist, and painter who migrated from El Salvador to Australia in 1984. A professional artist since 1989, she has lectured at the Victorian College of the Arts, developing an online Storyboarding course, and has mentored Indigenous filmmakers through the Australian Film and Television School. For over a decade, she has divided her time between Malta and Australia, where her recent body of work reflects her fascination with observing strangers at a local bus stop — imagining their stories and destinations. This contemplation inspires her figurative portraits and landscapes, created in acrylic, oil, watercolour, and dry media. Pena’s work has been exhibited nationally, including as a finalist in The Percivals Portrait Award, The Doyles Art Awards, and in the Pride Exhibition (2024), as well as Nature: The Wonder and the Tragedy (2021).
