Helen Durant is a Savannah-based artist who loves change. Her layered, expressive and gestural works survey her surrounding environment, marking the passage of time. Often incorporating depictions of wildlife, Helen has a deep love of the natural world and the creatures who inhabit it. Her creative process always begins with drawing, evolving through experimentations with paint, torn paper and found objects. Helen is also interested in the role played by the unconscious in her work, striving not to force the content, but rather to let it emerge out of the process itself. Helen was born in Atlanta where she spent much of her career. She studied art at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA and the Cape School of Art, Provincetown, MA. She also took instruction from artists Herbert Creecy, Walt Martin, Jimmy Yarborough and Ben Smith. Early on, constantly drawing the world around her, her subjects were often her family life and four children. Before moving to Savannah in 2017, Helen had a studio at the old Murry Mill, known today as the Goat Farm. Her work has been exhibited across the United States, and can be found in public, corporate, and private collections throughout the United States and abroad.
