Sally Van Doren is a poet and visual artist whose work explores the intersection of language, gesture, and abstraction. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she earned a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University and an M.F.A. from the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Her poetry, recognized with the Walt Whitman Award, and collections including Sex at Noon Taxes, Possessive, Promise, and Sibilance, are marked by precision, emotional acuity, and a fearless engagement with language’s textures.'In her visual practice, Van Doren transforms text, calligraphy, and asemic marks into layered, abstract compositions that traverse the boundary between writing and drawing. Her work has been exhibited widely in solo and group shows and often intersects with her literary projects, creating immersive spaces where word and image converge. Van Doren has taught workshops at institutions including the 92nd Street Y, and she continues to write, draw, and teach from her studio in West Cornwall, Connecticut, producing work that is both intimate and expansive, cerebral and tactile.
