Brianna Martray creates complex and dynamic free-hand drawings with graphite, charcoal, pastels, and ink. The style she has developed is an ethereal type of quasi-abstract formalism, a vein of unique artistic expression that explores the pathless liminal space between representational art and total abstraction. Brianna is a Colorado native whose interest in art was cultivated at a young age by her uncle who taught fine art at Brooklyn College for nearly two decades. Brianna went to school for creative writing at the University of Colorado at Denver but was drawn to become a full-time visual artist in 2006. Her first professional creations were oil paintings, then a few years later she evolved into award-winning sculptural work, and finally in 2018 she transitioned to creating free-hand drawings. Her talent for fluidly working with a multiplicity of tools and materials has always been second-nature, and she has maintained an uncanny consistency and clarity of creative voice as her visual expressions have evolved through multiple media and into her current body of work. She has received dozens of accolades nationally during her career, including Best of Show awards at Pearl Street Arts Fest (2023), Bayou City Art Festival (2019 & 2013), and Decatur Art Festival (2013), and Third Place Overall at Cherry Creek Arts Festival in 2012. Brianna was chosen as Poster Artist for the Des Moines Arts Festival in 2021, and she created the acclaimed Shadow Happy installation that was on display in Terminal A at Denver International Airport in 2011/12. Brianna’s creations convey an architectural/organic world which thrives in paradox and ambiguity; it’s a place that gives voice to so much more than can be articulated with sound or words. Each piece she creates is an earnest translation of the feelings, ideas, images, landscapes, and visions of her inner world—for Brianna, the ultimate goal of her creative life is to ardently impart to your inner world what she can from her own.
