Cat Balco (b. 1975, United States) is a painter whose vibrant abstract works investigate pattern, repetition, and the generative potential of color. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas and wood panel, Balco constructs layered compositions that merge systematic mark-making with gestural spontaneity, creating densely worked surfaces that pulse with optical energy and rhythmic intensity. Balco's practice is rooted in process and accumulation. Her paintings often deploy repetitive motifs—loops, stripes, grids, and ellipses—that function as structural scaffolding for chromatic experimentation. Through deliberate layering and the interplay of transparent and opaque passages, she builds fields of color that shift between flatness and depth, control and release. Each work operates as both system and improvisation, balancing the rigor of seriality with the unpredictability of the hand. Her approach draws on the legacies of pattern and decoration, color field painting, and contemporary abstraction, while remaining distinctly personal. Balco's surfaces are alive with movement—marks accumulate, overlap, and jostle for space, creating compositions that reward prolonged observation. The work resists easy resolution, instead offering viewers an experience of visual rhythm, density, and the subtle tensions between order and chaos. Balco has presented solo exhibitions at Rick Wester Fine Art, New York (2021, 2019); Five Points Gallery, Torrington, Connecticut (2017); Real Art Ways, Hartford, Connecticut (2014); and the University Gallery, California State University, Sacramento (2013), among others. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Hollis Taggart Gallery, Southport, Connecticut; The Provincetown Art Association and Museum; Alexey Von Schlippe Gallery, University of Connecticut; Weidner Gallery at Trinity College, Hartford; Washington Art Association, Washington Depot, Connecticut; and The Painting Center, New York, among others. Her work has been reviewed in Art New England, The New York Times, The Hartford Courant, and The New Yorker, and featured in online platforms including Gorky's Granddaughter and Two Coats of Paint. She has received numerous grants and awards, including a 2021 Lillian Orlowski and William Freed Grant from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, a 2020 Artists Fellowship from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, and the 2007 Helen Winternitz Award for Excellence in Painting from Yale School of Art. Balco's work is held in public and private collections, including AllianceBernstein, Fidelity Investments, Credit Suisse, the Kirkpatrick Bank Collection, and the State of Connecticut. She has completed large-scale public commissions at Gateway Community College, New Haven, and 360 State Street, New Haven. She holds a BA in Studio Art from Yale University (1997) and an MFA in Painting from Yale School of Art (2007). Balco is Professor of Painting at Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, where she served as Chair of the Fine Arts Department from 2014 to 2017. She lives and works in Connecticut.
