Vicky Barranguet (b. 1973, Montevideo) lives and works in New York. Her multidisciplinary practice is grounded in an empirical investigation of pictorial structure, where spontaneous gestures evolve into layered and intricate visual systems. Through a process balancing improvisation, rhythm, spatial organization, and meticulous attention to detail, Barranguet creates works that explore the relationship between intuition and structure, gesture and control. Her paintings unfold as emotionally resonant compositions that engage perception, movement, and materiality through a richly expressive visual language.Expanding beyond the traditional boundaries of painting, Barranguet’s practice moves fluidly across live performance, music, fashion, and large-scale commissions. In 2005, she created Painting Music, an ongoing live painting and music performance developed in collaboration with Latin Grammy–nominated pianist Gustavo Casenave and featuring Grammy Award winners Jane Ira Bloom and Federico Britos. Her interdisciplinary collaborations continued through hand-painted fashion collections presented during Uruguay Fashion Week and partnerships with internationally recognized brands including Nike, Adidas, and Longchamp. In 2010, her work was featured in Jodi Arnold’s New York collection and highlighted by The New York Times.Barranguet has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Latin America, with works included in private and institutional collections. Her career includes exhibitions at Lincoln Center’s Cork Gallery in a show curated by members of The Frick Collection, public commissions for the University of California San Diego and PWC’s headquarters at 90 Park Avenue in New York, and recognition through Merit Awards from the Art Students League of New York. Through abstraction, gesture, and sensory exploration, her work reflects a dynamic dialogue between contemporary Latin American perspectives and an expansive international artistic landscape.
