Minnesota artist, Andrew Grum Carr, was born and raised in the Merriam Park neighborhood in St. Paul, MN. That neighborhood, and the Twin Cities more broadly, provide him meaningful subject matter. Carr's art training comes primarily from the St. Paul Art Academy, learning from and eventually working for Jim Robinson and Sarah Howard. There, Carr encountered artists that continue to have an enduring influence on his work: Hiroshige, Degas, and Edmund Dulac. Carr spent years studying Philosophy and Literature at the University of St. Thomas. Reading, writing, philosophy, and literature are essential aspects of his artistic life and intersect with his drawing and painting in a manner of important - if implicit - ways. After teaching for years at the Art Academy and high school level, Carr found himself energized by the work he helped his students create, but ultimately felt a strong desire to dedicate time and space to his own artwork. He continues to teach part time, and positively regards teaching as a stepping stone into his art career. Additionally, for the last few years, Carr has been writing an ongoing series of essays exploring works of art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. In 2024, Carr took first place in category at the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Show for his painting, Imniza Ska. The biggest career highlight, he notes, is his recent residency with Lakewood Cemetery. There, Carr produced nine large watercolors depicting locations on the cemetery grounds, along with a long-form personal essay about the Memorial Chapel and his experiences as a teacher in the midst of grief. That project provided the impetus for some of his favorite painting and writing, and the work fostered new connections with friends, family, and people in his community. Carr seeks to pursue work that fosters that level of connection.
