Minnesota artist Fred Hagstrom received his BA from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and his MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He studied at the University of Chicago for one year, as well as under S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris, France. Hagstrom always wanted to be an artist, settling on drawing and printmaking after an initial interest in ceramics. Hagstrom was Professor of Art at Carleton College in Northfield, MN for 39 years before retiring. Highlights of his teaching career include leading students on thirteen 10-week programs abroad. Hagstrom's work is featured in collections at the WalkerArt Center, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Macalester College, Purdue University, University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College, the Tweed Museum, and his books are included in the Library of Congress and over 50 college and university collections, including several international collections. In 2022, Hagstrom was honored by The College Art Association with the Distinguished Teaching of Art Award, an esteemed achievement. In 2014, Hagstrom received the Teaching Excellence in Printmaking Award from printmaking organization Southern Graphics International. That same year in Minnesota, Hagstrom received the Book Artist of the Year Award. Hagstrom lives and maintains a studio in Albuquerque.
