Thai artist Vichit Nongnual is famous among collectors, gallery owners and art enthusiasts around the world. His arresting, large-scale portraits make an immediate impact, combining traditionally realistic portraiture with abstraction, symbolism, and surrealism. After studying at Silpakorn University, Vichit set up his own studio Bangkok, Eco-Clay. While developing his practise in sculpture, however, Vichit also developed a love for western cultures and art. For a number of years, he has been known for his fascinating paintings, which layer a traditional portrait format with symbols representing the inner thoughts and feelings of the subject. The tremendous scale of the work, combined with the intricacy of Vichit's visualised metaphors, makes these pieces into something completely unique. Using illustrative influences from cultures around Asia, as well as his own unique take on each subject he captures, Vichit's dream-like portraits combine bold statement and gentle poetry.
