Klaus Janson (born June 26, 1952, in Coburg, Germany) is a German-born American comic book artist, best known for his work as an inker. He moved to the United States as a child and began his comics career in the 1970s. Janson first gained recognition for his inking on Marvel Comics titles, including The Defenders and Daredevil, where his work helped define the visual style of the series. He is widely known for his long collaboration with Frank Miller, particularly on Daredevil and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, contributing to some of the most influential comics of the era. Janson is praised for his ability to enhance the penciler’s work while maintaining clarity, depth, and dramatic impact. Beyond inking, he has also penciled and written comics for major publishers, including Marvel, DC, and independent projects. His style is influenced by expressionism and impressionism, often emphasizing mood, atmosphere, and emotional storytelling. Janson has collaborated with numerous notable artists, such as John Romita Jr., Gene Colan, and Bill Sienkiewicz. In addition to his professional work, he has taught comic art at the School of Visual Arts in New York, mentoring several generations of artists.
