Julia Campisi (b. 1985, Canada) is a Toronto-based artist whose practice uses fantasy as a method for engaging with the present. Her work investigates the micro-movements of surfaces, exploring how cultural knowledge and material histories shape what we see, value, and forget. Campisi employs photography, sculpture, and installation to document and rework traces she encounters in the city, building an index of touch, a register of time, and a marker of “right now.” Her signature pink sculptures, produced through intensive molding and casting with resin and acrylic, resist fixed meaning, embracing impermanence, absurdity, and the labor embedded in civic space. Campisi holds an H.BA from McMaster University and a BFA from Concordia University, completed at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson), and is currently completing her MFA at York University. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Namara Projects and the Toronto Sculpture Garden, and in group exhibitions at Friend of a Friend Gallery (Denver), The Plumb (Toronto), ArtWorxTO TOFA (Toronto), and Equity Gallery (New York), among others. Her work is included in the collections of the Ottawa Art Gallery and Drake Hotel, among others. Campisi approaches art-making as a way to complicate what we take for granted: to hold space for ambiguity and gesture toward futures that do not yet exist.
