Eric Hibit works in painting, ink, and ceramics, pursuing a practice rooted in sustained attention to the sensory world — its pleasures, its excesses, its quiet transformations. Born in Rochester, New York, Hibit lives and works in New York City. His paintings proceed from close observation of objects and organisms at the threshold of the ordinary and the marvelous: a fruit stand functioning as a painter's palette, mushrooms rendered with the gravitas of portraiture, flowers whose vitality strains the limits of representation. Across these subjects, Hibit develops a chromatic language of unusual richness and conviction — one in which color is simultaneously subject, structure, and affect. Hibit studied at the Corcoran College of Art + Design (BFA, 1998) and Yale University School of Art (MFA, 2003). His exhibition history spans institutions and galleries across the United States and internationally. In New York, he has shown at the Brooklyn Museum, Morgan Lehman Gallery, Deanna Evans Projects, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and Ortega y Gasset Projects, among others. National venues include the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina; the Cape Cod Museum of Art; and Adds Donna, Chicago. His work has been presented internationally in France, Sweden, Norway, and Morocco. Residencies have taken Hibit to Giverny, France, with the Terra Foundation (2003); to New York with the UNILEVER Residency (2015); and to Tetouan, Morocco, with Green Olives Arts (2019). His writing and images have appeared in publications including Color Theory for Dummies (Wiley, 2022), the artist's book Paintings and Fables with Wayne Koestenbaum (2017), and Dear Hollywood Writers, with poet Geoffrey Young (Suzy Solidor Editions, 2017). His work has been reviewed and featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Village Voice, Hyperallergic, and Newsweek. Hibit has taught at Cornell University, The Cooper Union, Yale University, NYU, Hunter College, Tyler School of Art, and Drexel University. He is Co-Director of Ortega y Gasset Projects, an artist-run gallery in Brooklyn, where he has curated exhibitions since 2014.
