Pancho Luna, born July 15, 1957 is a mixed media sculptor interested in quasi-architectural arrangements where fabricated books are composed with the same care as a still life. Luna’s fascination with book shelves began in his grandmother’s library where he remembers it as a magical and eclectic place with many books in many languages he did not yet understand. He began to appreciate the different ways of reading a book -- as pure color, shape, smell, texture; as repositories of photographs, illustrations; and ultimately as sites of experience-- in short, as both symbols and objects. This nature of storytelling by means other than words on paper is the phenomenon Luna explores in his bookshelves. He says, “The bookshelves and their infinite combination of possibilities create what I call an "illusory collage". The invented titles trigger stories that the viewer can imagine or recreate with existing authors or titles. The majority of images that coexist in the work are photos taken by me, and some images scanned from real books” His practice carries on the modernist tradition of acrylic sculpture, transforming the material into beautiful texts, creating polished books from acrylic blocks. He then incorporates a binding with images and worlds that reflect his consciousness, recreating the esoteric quality of his experiences in the family library. The seductive nature of these sculptures is much like the books he could not yet read, almost entirely aesthetic. The composed set of clear blocks are stacked, aligned, and tilted, setting slivers of fine lines and bright colors in staccato rhythms that flicker and change as the viewer moves across and around, refracting the ambient light in blended, geometrical abstraction. Luna describes, “As you go through the work with your eyes the images are mirrored, they cross each other creating an optical illusion, where everything moves, everything is illuminated and reflected creating an atmosphere with its own light that is projected generating new forms, creating a ‘fourth dimension’”. And yet, Luna is no pure abstractionist. Born Francisco Pancho Luna in La Plata, Argentina, fundamentally, he is a storyteller interested in communicating fresh ideas about art history, global political and social issues, technology, science, architecture, music, religion, and cultural identity
