Ian Chapman is a ceramicist whose work occupies the delicate space between functional vessel and abstract sculpture. Based in the North of England, Ian’s practice is rooted in a lifelong fascination with structural balance, drawing on his extensive background in 3D design to create forms that feel both architectural and organic. Artistic PhilosophyIan’s work is an exploration of "dynamic balance." His standing forms, dishes, and wall panels often begin with the familiar silhouette of a pot, yet they are frequently conceived as three-dimensional abstract paintings. He is particularly drawn to forms that imply energy and movement—narrow bases that sweep upward into wide, expansive openings—referencing the "winged" geometry of sails, fins, and modern architecture."What interests me are forms which are dynamic but balanced," Ian notes. This pursuit of poise is reflected in his decoration, where simple, abstract linear patterns interact with the physical contours of the clay. Recently, his work has embraced a warmer palette, inspired by the quality of light and sun experienced during his travels abroad. The Process: From Drawing to KilnEvery piece begins as a design on paper. Ian translates these sketches into reality using flat slabs of clay, which are shaped in concave plaster moulds to achieve precise curves. Once constructed and refined, the surface becomes a canvas for texture and tone. His technical process is meticulous and multi-staged: Surface Preparation: Forms are decorated with incised lines and slips before a bisque firing.Inlay & Glazing: Manganese dioxide is inlaid into the textures to provide definition. Interior surfaces are poured with glaze, while the exteriors receive a sprayed application of matt or semi-matt glazes.Atmospheric Firing: The work is fired to stoneware temperatures in a gas kiln with light reduction, creating a sophisticated, high-fired finish.Finishing Touches: A final earthenware firing is often used to add subtle "blushes" of colour, occasionally finished with delicate gold gilding to achieve perfect visual equilibrium. Background & CareerAfter training in 3D Product Design at Manchester Polytechnic in the 1970s (earning both a BA and MA), Ian spent over thirty years as a dedicated educator. He led the Ceramics department at City College Manchester before retiring in 2011 to focus exclusively on his studio practice. Since then, Ian has become a regular fixture at the UK’s premier ceramic events, including Potfest in the Park and The Hepworth Wakefield Ceramics Fair. His work is held in private collections across the country and is represented by select galleries throughout the UK.
