A profound transition from the structured world of commercial design to the expressive freedom of fine art defines the practice of Maria Motowylczyk. Originally born in Nottingham, Maria’s artistic journey began at the University of Wolverhampton, where she studied Graphic Design. This early training provided a rigorous foundation in composition and visual narrative, which she later refined through an extensive career in publishing—illustrating fourteen children’s books for prestigious houses including Usborne and Lion Hudson. Maria’s current practice is a sophisticated exploration of the British landscape, encompassing painting, drawing, and printmaking. Her work is driven by a deep-seated passion for en plein air study, frequently working in the field to capture the immediate spirit and atmospheric resonance of a location. She is particularly drawn to the fugitive qualities of winter light, often using pastels and mixed media to examine the stark, quiet architecture of woodland and moors. Her technique is characterised by a layered, tactile approach. By integrating materials such as acrylic, charcoal, and plaster, she creates surfaces that feel both aged and immediate. This "history" within the paint allows her to move beyond mere representation, aiming instead to evoke the sensory experience of a place—the bite of a frost or the weight of a gathering storm. Maria’s professional standing is supported by a history of critical recognition and selection for prestigious open exhibitions. In 2024, her work was selected for the Baltic Contemporary Open, and she has previously been awarded First Prize at the Fishguard Arts Society Open by the sculptor and art historian Peter Lord. Based in the North of England, Maria has become a notable voice within the contemporary landscape scene, with her pieces held in private collections across the UK and valued for their atmospheric depth and honest, observational soul.
