Brenden Spivey is a contemporary abstract artist whose vibrant, layered works explore the dynamic relationships between color, texture, and shape. Born in Newark, Ohio, and now based in Columbus, Spivey found his voice as an artist through a deepening connection with the region’s thriving creative community. Drawing inspiration from mid-century modern design, nature, music, and travel, Spivey’s paintings are both intuitive and intentional — rich in movement, emotional resonance, and playful structure. His process is driven by color, allowing compositions to evolve organically as he builds textured layers using brushes, palette knives, and scrapers. His work has been exhibited internationally and is included in private and corporate collections, including Hilton Hotels, Columbus Metropolitan Library, and Charles Penzone Salons. With each piece, Spivey aims to evoke curiosity, dialogue, and emotional reflection. Beyond the studio, he is an active supporter of arts-based community initiatives and is committed to using his practice to promote empathy, inclusion, and social awareness. Artist Statement: My process is intuitive and emotionally driven — each composition unfolds organically through the interplay of color and shape. I do not begin with a set plan. Instead, I follow the feeling of each hue, letting emotion guide the evolution of the piece. Influenced by the color sensibility of Stanley Whitney and the gestural freedom of Joan Mitchell, I aim to blend structure and spontaneity. Whimsy plays a central role in my work, showing up in unexpected combinations, overlapping forms, and the rhythm of shifting palettes. Each painting begins with a grounding layer of rich, dark tones — black, brown, or deep neutrals — before building up layers of warm and cool colors using a mix of brushes, scrapers, and palette knives. This process creates a tactile surface with visual depth, revealing the emotional complexity beneath the color. Ultimately, my paintings are invitations — vibrant, layered, and expressive. They reflect my own emotional landscape, while encouraging viewers to engage their senses, feel deeply, and discover their own stories within the work.
