Artist Statement: "Monica Setziol-Phillips is a weaver and woodcarver. She has been working in these two media for a very long time. She learned to weave from Solange Kowert at PSU. She learned to carve by observing her father, Roy Setziol, who was instrumental in her being able to carve and then create her own works.She sees her work as a collaboration. There is the wood or wool, there are the tools, the bench, the loom and there is the worker. It was, is, and always will be a privilege, challenge, and exciting experience to be involved with these two media. She also feels most fortunate to have been able to teach at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Having the privilege to work with students has deepened her understanding of and love for the craft and the many lessons it has to teach us. It is especially gratifying to have been able to come together with a group of these former students to form the Carver’s Collective.
