Stephen Phibbs is a visual artist whose contempory paintings have found a steady stream of interest from art enthusiasts and buyers for the past 25 years. In 2001 he held his first solo exhibition of thought provoking paintings that deconstruct the signs and symbols of Australian popular culture. From 2002 his art practice evolved through seeing the landscape through a multi dimensional approach. Referencing photo's, drawings and memory of place, He says" these works are about the metaphysical and physical elements of a site. The relationships and juxtapositions discovered in these chance objects, signify multiple options of interpretation, creating simultaneous perspectives depending on the viewer. 2003 - 2007 saw successful solo and prestigeous group exhibitions with many works accuired into private collections around the world. In 2006 he was selected in an emerging artists touring exhibtion of N.S.W regional galleries. In 2007 he was selected to participate in the ABC t.v documentary"Painting Australia'. This aired multiple times in Australia, The U.k , and S/E Asia. This resulted in being represented by leading Australian gallery, art gallery Schubert. From 2008 - 2011. Stephen then exhibited in 18 group exhibtions throughout Australia. In 2010 he explored the fragility of the Australian landscape with a considered exhibition titled "You are here" at Retrospect galleries, Byron bay. In 2011 he held a notable exhibition depicting the iconic Queensland shipwreck"the Cherry venture"at Caloundra regional gallery. In 2014 he held a retrospective of his work at Lone goat gallery, Byron bay. From 2014 to the present Stephen has exhibited in numerable group exhibitions and art fairs in Australia and internationally and is represented by Gallery one southport Queensland, and Nissarana galleries Bangalow NSW, Richmond Victoria and Noosa Queensland. Artist Statement The creative act is an experimental journey where expectations change and discoveries become the catalyst to move beyond what is already known. The energising and challenging nature of developing ideas and processes is a motivating force. Through creativity, I seek a unification of Art and Life that hopefully will result in works of relevance and interest.
