HOLLY OSBOURNE (American b.- ) Painter Lives and works in Portland, Oregon My work is a focus of the land and its beauty. I love to study and explore the area where water meets land. In all of my work I choose to leave some of the first color/underpainting showing. Sometimes I paint around it to create a figure and sometimes I leave it as a ground or negative space. The negative space serves as a resting point for the eye or a hunt to find and contemplate shapes. I like the contrast between the solid, softer paint (often mixed with marble dust) and the heavier strokes of oil. I am further inspired to leave unfilled space after seeing Leonardo da Vinci’s Adoration of the Magi many years ago. There is so much beauty and an interesting sort of balance that exists in its unfinished state. I like putting down a lot of color – but I also thoughtfully exercise restraint. It is this tension that helps me decide when the painting is finished.
