Jan Kaláb (b. 1978, Prague, Czechoslovakia) is one of the founding pioneers of the Prague underground graffiti and street art scene. Operating under the tags Cakes and later Point, he painted throughout the city with his crew, The DSK, before a pivotal trip to New York brought him into direct contact with the birthplace of the movement, where he painted over two hundred whole cars. Back in Prague, he became the first graffiti artist in history to earn a Masters degree from the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 2006 -- a milestone that marked both a personal threshold and a quiet institutional reckoning with the legitimacy of street art as a fine art discipline.Around 2000, the shift to the tag Point signaled a ground-breaking turn in his practice. Kaláb became one of the first artists to leave the wall behind entirely, translating graffiti into three dimensions through sculptures and objects that occupied the boundary between spatial installation, sculpture, and architecture. That restless formal evolution has continued ever since -- from 3D lettering and light installations to the body of work that defines him today. His current practice circles obsessively around a single form: the circle. Deformed, volumetric, flat, full, or hollow, it functions as a container of matter that vibrates with color. His paintings and sculptures are increasingly inseparable -- voluminous canvases built on frames he constructs himself, painted with subtle color gradations that play light against volume and collapse the boundary between the two.His works are held in the permanent collections of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (Cedar Rapids), the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes (Rio de Janeiro), the DEJI Art Museum (China), and the Osan Museum (South Korea), and are part of the private collections of Dior and Tiffany. He exhibits internationally across New York, Miami, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Seoul, and Shanghai. He lives and works in Prague.
