Chiho Aoshima (b. 1974) is a contemporary Japanese artist associated with the Superflat movement and the early circle of Takashi Murakami’s Kaikai Kiki collective. Self-taught and originally trained in economics, she first gained recognition for her digitally composed dreamscapes created in Adobe Illustrator, later expanding into drawing, animation, sculpture, and ceramics. Her works blend Japanese folklore, manga aesthetics, and traditional ukiyo-e influences into fantastical landscapes populated by spirits, anthropomorphic architecture, and otherworldly female figures. Through this surreal visual language, Aoshima explores themes of nature and technology, beauty and decay, life and death, establishing herself as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Japanese art.
