Marcela Gontijo was born in Belo Horizonte in 1966 and moved to Brasília as a child, where she graduated in Fine Arts from the Universidade de Brasília and has lived and worked ever since. Her practice moves fluidly between painting, photography, installation, and performance, resisting easy categorization while maintaining a consistent and rigorous internal logic. Her paintings are built from photographic fragments and experimental collage, maintaining a persistent dialogue with the urban environment -- its surfaces, its rhythms, its accumulated visual texture. Through a sustained process of searching for images, objects, places, and materials, she develops a new geometry out of found and constructed elements, one that is neither purely abstract nor purely documentary.Space in her work functions as a grid, a rhizomatic structure where lines have no fixed origin or destination and each point connects to any other. Her lines do not stop at the edge of the canvas. They push past the frame and into the room, collapsing the boundary between the pictorial and the spatial and demanding that the work be understood as something that occupies the world rather than simply representing it. She lives and works in Brasília.
