Tatiana Mesquitela is a self-taught painter born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her practice is deeply rooted in the dense and sensorial world of Brazilian nature, where vegetation, humidity, and light become the foundation for a visual language that moves between landscape and abstraction. Working primarily in oil on canvas, she approaches the vegetal environment not as a literal subject, but as a living structure—an evolving system of color, growth, and organic rhythm. Her paintings are built through layered chromatic fields in which forms emerge and dissolve simultaneously. Leaves, branches, and natural contours appear only to be absorbed back into fields of saturation, creating works that hover between recognition and disappearance. Rather than describing nature, Mesquitela translates it into atmosphere and sensation, constructing immersive environments where color becomes the primary vehicle of expression.Central to her practice is an investigation into expanded landscapes and the expressive autonomy of color. Her compositions are lush and visually abundant, yet carefully balanced, avoiding decoration in favor of intensity and depth. Each surface operates as a field of tension between control and instinct, where gesture and structure coexist within the same pictorial space. The result is a body of work that is both materially grounded and perceptually expansive.Mesquitela began her artistic production in 2019 in Lisbon, where she developed her studio practice and first body of works. Her debut group exhibition, Le Carrousel, was presented in 2020 in the Estrela district of Lisbon, curated by David Reis, marking her entry into the contemporary art scene. In 2024, she completed Nuances of the Gaze with Luiz Pizarro at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, further expanding her technical and conceptual approach to painting. In 2025, she participated in Expansion of Space, curated by Maurício Lima, in Rio de Janeiro. Her work continues to evolve across contexts in Brazil and Europe, informed by both her origins in Rio de Janeiro and her formative years in Lisbon. She is represented by DOMO, Calada Cem, Black Tower Gallery, and Galeria Clima. She lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
