Oluwatobi Adewumi is a Nigerian born contemporary artist based in McNeil, Arkansas. Working primarily with charcoal and acrylic, he expands portraiture through materially layered compositions that explore migration, identity, and belonging. His practice is shaped by his relocation from Nigeria to the American South, where he navigates shifting cultural and social environments. Through a process of layering, fragmentation, and reconfiguration, Adewumi constructs portraits that exist between realism and abstraction, embedding elements of text, imagery, and symbolic references into the surface of the work. These compositions function as both images and sites of memory, where personal and collective histories intersect. His work examines the complexities of identity within the African diaspora, challenging fixed narratives while emphasizing resilience, dignity, and transformation. Adewumi has exhibited across the United States and internationally, including solo presentations at the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum and Von Lintel Gallery. His practice continues to develop through large-scale works that deepen his exploration of material, narrative, and cultural experience.
