Paulo Roberto Frade Laender (b. 1945, Teófilo Otoni, Minas Gerais, Brazil) is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, printmaking, architecture, design, and object-based work.He began his artistic training in 1962 in Belo Horizonte, studying painting under Maria Helena Andrés and joining the Oficina group, an important formative context for his early development. He later expanded his technical and conceptual foundation through printmaking studies at the Escola Guignard and at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ). Early in his career, he participated in significant group exhibitions and major art events, including the São Paulo Biennial, positioning his work within key currents of Brazilian contemporary art.In 1970, Laender graduated in architecture from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), where he also taught until 1981. This dual engagement with academic research and artistic production established a structural sensibility that would remain central throughout his practice. Over time, his work expanded beyond traditional fine art media into sculpture, jewelry design, and set design, consistently informed by a sustained investigation of materiality and form.During the 1980s, he founded and directed jewelry and casting workshops in Belo Horizonte and undertook international research that further broadened his material and conceptual approach. His career developed through extensive exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including presentations in New York, Barcelona, and San Francisco. From the 1990s onward, he consolidated a mature practice through continued production in sculpture, painting, and object-based works, alongside the publication of a monographic study dedicated to his oeuvre.Laender’s work is defined by a strong sculptural presence, experimental engagement with materials, and a continuous dialogue between architectural structure and poetic construction, reflecting the hybrid foundation of his training in both art and architecture.
