Greg Gillespie is an internationally recognized fine art wood artist who has spent more than 40 years carving decorative birds and paddles. Over the course of his career, he has received numerous awards at major wildfowl carving exhibitions, including the Ward World Wildfowl Carving Championship in the United States and the Canadian National Wildfowl Carving Championship. Best known for his finely detailed and realistically carved and painted songbirds, Greg has also expanded his artistic practice into interpretive wood sculpture. In 2016, he earned the designation of “Master Carver” after placing third in the World Interpretive Wildfowl Wood Sculpture division at the Ward Championship with his piece Startled. The previous year, his first world-level interpretive entry, Out for a Paddle, received Second in Show in the People’s Choice Award category at the same event. Greg’s interpretive work has continued to gain recognition in the Canadian art community. In 2023, he received a Juror’s Choice Award for an interpretive sculpture featured in the Radical Feathers exhibition at the Kawartha Art Gallery. In 2024, he was honoured with the Creative Innovation Award from the Society of Canadian Artists for another interpretive sculpture entry. Today, his carvings and sculptures can be found in private collections across North America and Europe.
