Christopher Belluschi is a sculptor whose work moves along the pendulum between figuration and abstraction — carving form from stone and wood until something essential and inevitable emerges from the material itself. His practice carries a deep sensitivity to architectural context, exploring the atmospheric relationship between object, site, and viewer with a poetic quiet that feels both ancient and entirely present. Belluschi works through direct carving in marble, travertine, and various wood species — a process that remains instinctive at its core. Forms and ideas reveal themselves gradually, shaped as much by the material's nature as by the maker's hand. As an apprentice to stone sculptor M. J. Anderson, he learned the craft working alongside her in her studio in Nehalem, Oregon, and traveled with her to Carrara, Italy in 2024 and 2026 to source marble and carve within the region’s longstanding sculptural tradition. The great-grandson of internationally reknowned architect Pietro Belluschi, he studied art and anthropology at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. His work has been exhibited throughout Oregon and is held in numerous private collections. Work by Christopher Bellushi is available through Illumine Gallery.
