Mira Christine Vitarello is a Connecticut–based visual artist working primarily in soft pastel. Her work encompasses emotive portraiture, atmospheric landscapes, and intimate still lifes, drawing inspiration from everyday environments and quietly meaningful personal moments. Through an impressionistic approach and a rich, nuanced use of color, Vitarello explores themes of beauty, memory, and human connection.Although she has worked in oil, acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, and collage, Vitarello found her primary artistic voice in soft pastel, a medium that best supports her intuitive mark-making and sensitivity to light and atmosphere. She is recognized for her expressive surfaces and her ability to balance structure with spontaneity. Vitarello holds a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from the College of New Rochelle. She is an award-winning artist and a Signature Member of the Connecticut Pastel Society. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is held in private collections. In addition to her studio practice, Vitarello is a seasoned art educator and workshop instructor. She has developed and led programs for artists at all levels and has presented for regional and national arts organizations. She currently lives and works in Ridgefield, Connecticut. I work in soft pastel because it allows for immediacy, intimacy, and an honest response to what I see and feel. My process is intuitive and layered, built through color, touch, and mark-making rather than strict planning. I am drawn to subjects that hold quiet emotional weight—places shaped by memory, figures caught in unguarded moments, and still lifes that suggest personal history. Light and atmosphere play a central role in my work. I use color not only descriptively, but emotionally, allowing it to shift mood and deepen narrative. Whether painting landscapes, portraits, or interiors, I am interested in how beauty and meaning emerge from ordinary experiences. At the core of my practice is a belief in art as a point of connection—to place, to memory, and to one another. My goal is to create work that feels both personal and open, inviting the viewer into a shared moment of reflection and recognition.
