Rubeena Ratcliffe is a Canadian artist whose paintings have been exhibited internationally. Born and raised in Edmonton and later trained as an architect in Halifax, she developed a deep fascination with the ways landscapes, objects, and portraits occupy and shape space. Her work takes on an abstract approach, often drawn from childhood memories and fleeting moments of the present, an exploration of the tension between impermanence and permanence. Ratcliffe’s process begins by distilling images into essential shapes and colours before building layered textures that bring each painting to life. She describes the impetus for her work as arising from the “screenshots” in her mind. Working primarily with acrylics on canvas, she creates pieces that may be read as landscapes, figures, or intimate gestures, though the specific interpretation is secondary. Above all, her intention is to make a beautiful painting, one that resonates with the people who encounter it.
