José Angel Nazabal studied at the prestigious Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro before pursuing advanced study in architecture at the Technological University of Havana José Antionio Echeverría where his visual art skills developed alongside his draftsmanship. Nazabal’s work focuses on self-referentiality, integrating elements of cinema and photography to construct visual narratives that reflect the unique experiences of the queer community in Cuba. The artist’s practice is characterized by the deliberate use of watercolor and digital art, challenging traditional academic techniques to create a dynamic interplay form and content. In addition to participating in exhibitions in both on the island and in Europe, Nazabal was selected by Swiss curator Hans Ulrich Obrist to contribute a portrait of Félix González-Torres for his passage in “The Queer Bible” published in 2020.
