Scott Duncan was an American painter and illustrator best known for his finely detailed maritime paintings of sailing ships, clipper ships, schooners, and racing yachts. Trained at Pratt Institute in New York, where he received his BFA in 1967, Duncan developed the disciplined draftsmanship and compositional skill that would define both his illustration work and his later studio paintings. Following his studies, he served as an illustrator with the U.S. Army Exhibit Unit in Alexandria, Virginia, before establishing himself as a freelance illustrator. His work appeared widely in publication, and four of his portraits were featured on the cover of Time magazine. Duncan’s paintings have been held in public and private collections, including the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.For many collectors, Duncan is most admired for his nautical subjects: tall ships under full sail, historic clippers, schooners cutting across open water, and racing yachts charged by wind and weather. His marine paintings combine technical accuracy with romantic atmosphere, capturing the drama of billowing sails, taut rigging, breaking waves, and shifting light across the sea. His sailing-vessel paintings are extremely realistic by focusing his use of tiny brushstrokes to create remarkable detail in the water, sails, and rigging.Works such as Clipper Full Sail and Racing W Class show Duncan’s ability to merge maritime precision with the timeless symbolism of the sea: voyage, craftsmanship, freedom, discipline, and adventure. Whether depicting a historic ship or a modern racing yacht, Duncan brought to each canvas a sense of movement and reverence for the sailing vessel as both an engineering achievement and a poetic subject.Griffith Art Gallery is pleased to represent this talented artist.
