Marie-José Nadal was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on April 22, 1931, and died on December 23, 2020. Raised in a family of artists, she studied with the noted Haitian painter Tamara Baussan before continuing her artistic education in France and Canada, where she specialized in ceramics and metal sculpture.An accomplished artist, writer, anthropologist, and educator, Nadal played a significant role in Haiti's cultural life. Her work was exhibited throughout Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. After more than twenty years in France, she returned to Haiti, where she continued to create art and mentor young artists.Beyond her artistic career, Nadal is widely recognized for her contributions to Haitian art history. In 1986, she co-authored La Peinture Haïtienne / Haitian Arts with Gérald Bloncourt, a landmark reference book on Haitian painting. Through her artwork and scholarship, she helped preserve and promote Haiti's rich artistic heritage and remains an important figure in the history of Haitian art.
