The Goodman Studio: Mastering the Art of Modern Blown Glass The Goodman Studio, established in 1989 by the late Jeff Goodman, has gained international acclaim for its modern blown glass vessels and innovative architectural glass. Located in Toronto, the studio produces one-of-a-kind, hand-made pieces in both its hot shop and kiln shop. The studio's team collaborates closely with individuals, interior designers, architects, and developers to create bespoke pieces for both commercial and residential projects. Their comprehensive process includes sample fabrication, design, management, engineering, shipping, and installation, ensuring every detail is meticulously handled. Artistic Innovation and Timeless Elegance The works of The Goodman Studio are known for their vibrant colors, fluid forms, and organic shapes. From lighting sculptures and hand-blown vessels to large-scale architectural glass installations, the studio's creations are a testament to the team's commitment to pushing the boundaries of their art. The Jeff Goodman classics remain a signature of the studio, while new designs and ideas continue to emerge, reflecting a blend of tradition and innovation. "Our team has grown and evolved," says Sylvia Lee of The Goodman Studio. "With these new members comes new talent and skills. We’ve started to include new processes such as kiln casting and fusing. We also work on larger scale installations which is always exciting." Collaborative Spirit and Inspired Designs The studio's environment fosters collaboration among designers, artists, and architects, enabling them to explore the infinite possibilities of glass. This collaborative spirit, combined with a constant desire to experiment and create, has allowed the studio to maintain its innovative edge since Jeff Goodman’s passing. The studio's calm, productive atmosphere continues to be a home for the creative artists he mentored and inspired. "I have always found inspiration in nostalgia," Sylvia Lee shares. "Antiques that remind me of different times and places. Reminiscing always brings a smile to my face and calm to my heart. I look at old objects and find inspiration in them for new shapes and themes. You can see that in the Abacus wall piece and the Telescope series." Showcasing Craftsmanship and Creativity The Goodman Studio showcases an array of glass vessels and installations at their Toronto studio and select galleries across North America. Notable installations and cast glass designs can be seen in prestigious locations such as the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto’s Hazelton Residence and Hotel, and The Ritz Carlton in Toronto. Each piece reflects the studio's dedication to elegance and craftsmanship. "I am finding inspiration for colors in tropical birds and floral arrangements such as poppies," Lee notes. "These always help me put together deep, rich color stories." A Hub for Artistic Collaboration Housed in a 6,000 square foot studio in Toronto, The Goodman Studio is situated in a growing area bustling with artists, makers, and design studios. This vibrant community provides a supportive network for collaboration on various projects, enhancing the studio’s creative output. "Our studio is a growing area with more and more artists, makers, and design studios. We seek each other out for support and collaborate on various projects," says Lee. "Coming to the studio and working with my crew and finishing the day with my family brings immense satisfaction." Continuing the Legacy The Goodman Studio continues to honor Jeff Goodman's legacy by producing exquisite, hand-crafted glass pieces that combine technical skill with artistic innovation. Their commitment to quality, collaboration, and creativity ensures that each piece is a unique work of art, resonating with both contemporary and timeless appeal.
