Philippe Vieux (born 1932, Port-au-Prince, Haiti) is a distinguished Haitian artist known for a refined, contemplative approach to painting. Educated at Collège Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Collège de Port-au-Prince, he began his artistic path early, choosing a lifelong dedication to painting after initially pursuing dance. His first watercolor exhibition at the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince attracted collectors and marked the beginning of a promising career. Guided by Dewitt Peters and Francine Murat, Vieux transitioned from watercolor to oil painting, developing a disciplined style notable for restraint, harmony, and emotional depth. Influenced by theatre, classical music, and literature, he paints with quiet sophistication—compositions shaped by balance, rhythm, and a nuanced sense of atmosphere. His work is frequently associated with Haiti’s cultural richness and the elegance of its artistic heritage. As noted in Haiti Voodoo Kingdom by John Franciscus (p. 92), Vieux’s career reflects a sustained commitment to craft and a thoughtful, enduring presence within Haitian art.
