Gesner Armand (1936–2008) was a Haitian painter born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti. He began studying drawing and watercolor at the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince in 1956 and later received a scholarship from the French government to study art in Paris in 1961. After two years abroad, he returned to Haiti, where he also served for a period as curator of the Musée d’Art Haïtien. Armand further developed his artistic practice through studies in both Paris and Mexico. Known for luminous countryside scenes and his distinctive depictions of pigeons, his work reflects a deep affection for the Haitian landscape. Art historian Gérald Alexis noted in Peintres Haïtiens that “Armand’s substantial work rests upon a mastery of color effects and a pure drawing.” His paintings have been exhibited internationally across the Americas and Europe.
